On July 17, 2024, the town of Jinja, Uganda, became a focal point for a momentous event—the commemoration of the Day of the African Child. This year’s theme, “Education for Children in Africa: The Time is Now,” echoed across the region, highlighting the urgent need to prioritize education for African children.

Historical Context

The Day of the African Child is an important annual event that commemorates the Soweto Uprising of June 16, 1976, when thousands of black schoolchildren in South Africa protested against the inferior quality of their education and demanded the right to be taught in their language. Tragically, the protest ended with hundreds of young students killed. Since 1991, the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) has dedicated this day to celebrating children in Africa and addressing the myriad challenges they face.

The Event in Jinja

The 2024 commemoration in Jinja brought together a wide array of participants, including government officials, non-governmental organizations, educators, parents, and, most importantly, children. The event was enriched with speeches, cultural performances, and interactive sessions aimed at fostering dialogue on how to improve educational opportunities for children in Africa.
